Earnings...I got this email concerning earnings across the market: <<<<<<<<<<<<<< After one quarter in publication, the Whisper Report is now read by more than 40,000 investors and analysts. Computer/Semiconductor Makers For the most part, the entire list of computer related companies reporting earnings Thursday are expected to beat the estimate slightly. The main exception is Compaq (CPQ). It is not really a secret and not really a whisper number anymore, but since Compaq is one of the most followed stocks in the market, we felt obligated to mention Compaq. For a couple of weeks there had been rumors that Compaq would warn of lower earnings. However, when the warning did not come, many analysts felt relieved and quietly began raising their expectation (with the exception a few analysts who felt the opposite). Then on Friday, Compaq warned that earnings would be $0.15 for the quarter while the consensus estimate was $0.31. Compaq€s press release is available here. Sun Microsystems (SUNW) The consensus estimate for Sun Microsystems is currently $0.35 vs. a whisper number of $0.36. The majority of the 17 analysts feel that the Company will report earnings of $0.35, though the top estimate is $0.38. However, the analysts have seen Sun beat estimates by about a penny almost each quarter and expect the company to do so again. Conference call information is not currently available for Sun; however, you may contact Mark Paisley at (800) 801-7869 for the number and passcode. Unisys (UIS) also has a track record of beating the estimates and the Company is expected to do so again. The consensus estimate is $0.24 while the whisper number is $0.25. Within the last few days the expectation has increased some and most are actually expecting $0.26 on Thursday from Unisys. Unisys€ conference call can be heard online at vcall.com beginning at 11:00 AM EST. Our whisper number for C-Cube Microsystems (CUBE) of $0.31 equals the consensus estimate, but recently some have whispered estimates a little higher. The most recent numbers being whispered is somewhere between $0.31 and $0.33. C-Cube€s conference call can be heard online at vcall.com beginning at 4:30 PM EST Some analysts believe Iomega (IOM) will gain $0.03 for the quarter while some believe the company will loss $0.03. There is not a really strong conviction either way and the consensus estimate is for the company to break even. Our whisper number is also for the company to break even. Software Four of the five analysts following Symantec (SYMC) believe the company will report earnings of $0.44 and the fifth believes the company will report $0.43. However, our whisper number is $0.45. We normally would not include GeoTel (GEOC) in the Whisper Report; however, with GeoTel€s deal with Cisco Systems (CSCO), we felt there would be enough interest. The company is expected to perform just like most other technology stocks on Thursday, when they are expected to beat the estimates by one cent. The whisper number is $0.13. Four of the five analysts€ official estimate is $0.12 and the fifth€s is $0.11 Brokerages Another brokerage firm is expected to release earnings on Thursday. Charles Schwab (SCH) is expected to report earnings of $0.38 compared to the consensus estimate of $0.31. However, after other brokerage firms have beaten already high whisper numbers this week, it won€t be too much of a surprise if Charles Schwab gets over $0.38. Auto-Makers The stocks to watch on Thursday come from the auto-makers. Both Ford (F) and General Motors (GM) are reporting, both have seen the analysts increase their estimates over the past few weeks, and both have high whisper numbers. Ford€s consensus estimate has gone from $1.29 to $1.39 during the quarter and the whisper number of $1.47 is a solid eight cents above the consensus estimate. The whisper number is two cents above the top analyst estimate of $1.45. The low estimate is $1.14. GM€s consensus estimate has gone from $2.49 to $2.89 during the quarter and the whisper number is now at $2.96 € seven cents above the consensus estimate. However, GM€s top estimate is $3.00, 12 cents above the whisper number, and the low estimate is $2.30. Toy Companies It seems the analysts feel just the opposite about the toy industry as they do about the auto-makers. Because the two toy companies reporting earnings on Thursday have seen their estimates cut during the quarter. Neither should beat estimates. Hasbro€s (HAS) whisper number has been cut a penny from $0.07 to $0.06. Most analysts are comfortable with the estimate, which equals our whisper number. However, the top estimate is $0.08. Mattel€s (MAT) estimate was cut after the company pre-announced. The estimate has gone from an expected loss of $0.01 to an expected loss of $0.08, which equals the whisper number.
