Why does everyone insist that the recent run-up is entirely based on takeover rumors? It's only partially based on that. Here's an old excerpt.

Pittsburgh, April 7 (Bloomberg) -- Fore Systems Inc. shares rose 8.6 percent amid optimism that the company won't miss profit forecasts for its fiscal fourth quarter and on speculation that it will be acquired by a large telephone-equipment maker.

Fore rose 1 13/16 to 22 15/16 in trading of 7.32 million. The stock has climbed 58 percent since Feb. 26, when Fore told analysts that fourth-quarter sales were lagging forecasts.

Fore's sales warning prompted concerns that the company also might miss profit forecasts. Now that the quarter has ended, the fact that the company hasn't said earnings will fall short suggests it will meet estimates. Fore also has a line of powerful computer switches that several large phone-equipment makers, such as Ericsson AB and Nokia Oyj, are looking to acquire. ''People are thinking they might have made the quarter, plus they are still an attractive target,'' said Esmeralda Silva, an analyst at market researcher International Data Corp.

Fore, which has been hurt by slowing corporate sales and stiff competition from No. 1 networking company Cisco Systems Inc., is expected to earn 11 cents a share in the fourth quarter ended last month, the average estimate of analysts polled by First Call Corp.

The Pittsburgh-based company will report fourth-quarter results April 22 after the close of regular U.S. trading.
