Just to take the temp of some of the attendees. In general most I spoke to
were not particularly concerned about the earnings report, they seemed to
think it was just a press thing. They seemed more interested in CPQ's new
direction. The "NonStop eBusiness" message seemed to be well received.

I did not go back down on Wednesday but I understand that Gates did
indeed show up for his keynote which was as usual well received.

rudedog.... it's just hard for me to believe and/or understand, even with the DEC merger, falling pC demand and prices, that they could miss by 50%. platt says things look good, GTW says things look good, Michael Dell is still comfortable he'll meet his number, AAPL comes thru with a nice report after selling a bunch of cheapie computers. Something is very wrong here, imho. El

rudedog: Re the "reasons" CPQ employees offered up for the recent debacle ....

Haven't those same problems been around since the DEC acquisition?? Didn't seem to effect CPQ's ability to figure out what was going on in Q3 or Q4 of last year.

<it seems possible that Mason really did not know the real numbers>

Having worked with developing financial systems that go across different accounting systems for major fortune 500 company that brought in about a dozen or more companies over a two year period, I think that Mason did know all along what the numbers were. The key tip off was the leak that was probably accidental, since a great deal of IR stastements to me and others on the thread tried to place a different spin on Mason's remark. IMO, the major problem here is work of spin doctors. The company I worked with eventually went belly up IMO due to too much spin doctoring. It is easier to work with the truth and make adjustments, rather than not know the truth and continue to make mistakes. To me this is a serious problem, and that is probably why the street is punishing Compaq stock so much. It is a healthy warning to get your cards on the table especially for the BOD and top company management.
