why does the bid drop down big and the ask stay the same or go down a fraction? then dropped closer to the bid later..

john,
I can't say for sure what is going on, but imagine the following legitimate scenario. What if the book looks like

bid 6 1/4 100
bid 6 5/16 100
bid 6 3/8 100
bid 6 7/16 100
ask 6 1/2 100
...

Now if someone comes in hell bent on selling 30000 shares, the spread is going to go from 1/16 to 1/4 in a hurry. If buying doesn't come in to raise the bid back up, then sells could come in lowering the ask, returning you to a reasonable spread but at the lower price.

Cheers,
William
