AMD: I-Watch Market Commentary

AMD -- Semicndtr-Brd Line -- Technology 15-Apr-99 10:23:04 Advanced Micro's management first warned investors in early February - "This quarter looks bad." Then came the second warning in early March saying "Make that - this quarter looks REALLY bad." Next, there was the third and final pre-announcement which said "No, we mean really, really bad." Finally, AMD reported 1Q results yesterday that were pretty bad but not quite as ugly as the Street thought they would be. The firm booked a quarterly loss of $0.81 compared to the thrice revised First Call consensus estimate for a loss of $0.92. In response to the narrower than predicted loss, the stock is up $5/16 to $15 1/16. A review of the I-Watch data shows that institutional brokers are offering to acquire large blocks of stock at $15 which suggest the stock should be able to hold above that level in the near-term. Institutional activity, as measured by block trading, is significant with 40% of all volume coming from block trades.
