Alastair, I agree that the ignore feature is a very bad idea...

The most compelling argument for it is that people will just ignore others by clicking past anyway, so why not make their lives easier.

Well, I liken this idea to handing out Heinekins at an AA meeting-- what's the big deal as they can go out and buy beer at any supermarket in town? I mean, they don't have to drink it if they don't want, right? The point is, the temptation is there and the temptation is bad.

The last thing SI needs is to be more like Raging Bull with scores of posts saying "Ignore so and so... I am!" Even worse, I see that rather than meaningful debate, people often find it easier just to ignore those that don't agree with them. Make it easy for people to ignore others on SI and I fear we'll see the same thing. Besides, if people really really want an automated way to ignore someone, they can always use Browsemaster.
