Alan,

Seems to me INTC should be able to combat a copycat manufacturer like AMD with patents. Anyone have any insight as to why this does not seem to occur?

Other than the instruction set architecture, AMD CPUs have not had any Intel components to them since about 1994, which was the last time Intel sued them.

Intel has signed agreements with most of its competitors not to sue them for patent infringement of x86 patents. There must be an excellent reason for this.
