12 workers lose $4m to 'gold boss'

WORKERS should be careful when their employers ask them to invest in bullion trading, police said yesterday.

They issued the advice after raiding a company in Kwun Tong reportedly involved in dubious bullion trade.

Senior Inspector Wong Chung-ming of the District Crime Squad, Kwun Tong, said police acted after receiving 12 reports, mainly from people in their 40s, who said they were deceived by a company engaged in Loco-London gold and silver trading since early last month.

Officers yesterday raided the company on Hoi Yuen Road following extensive investigations.

The manager, a 28-year-old man, 18 other men and 11 women were arrested.

Computers and documents were also seized.

Snr Insp Wong said the company had advertised in local newspapers offering cleaning and office assistant jobs.

Those recruited, mainly housewives or the unemployed, were later given work to calculate Loco-London gold transactions and then persuaded to invest in gold and silver trading.

''These jobs offered wages of more than $6,000 but required them to work only three to four hours.

''However, all the 12 victims ended up losing their investments and the amounts involved ranged from $250,000 to $1.8 million. The total amount lost is about $4 million,'' Snr Insp Wong said.
