I agree it won't replace it... but there are a lot of commodity type items which could easily be bought without touching/feeling them. This is particularly true when there are vast amounts of information available on-line about each item so you can actually find out much more about an item on-line than from a store clerk. Once on-line retailers get up to speed/size, the economies they will gain will allow them to easily offer better prices than many conventional retail establishments.

So if you want a commoditized item in the future, with a good price/value relationship... AND... if it is an item which can be shipped to you at a reasonable cost (ie. if it isn't too heavy or large) then you will probably buy it on-line. Well.... maybe not you.... but a lot of people will.

I think another good analogy is bank machines. A lot of people said they would never work because you lose the personal contact... well from my point of view.. I only use ATM's and don't miss waiting in line, the crowds or interacting with a teller at all. In fact, if you told most people they could shop for everything they need without having to go to one of those over crowded malls... well... I'd sure jump at the chance... Just call me anti-social I guess!!
