jlallen, We are stressing our pilots flying them on three missions/day. You train doing only one mission/day.

Another problem for the Apaches possibly is whethere the Russians have provided the Serbs with thermal night vision devices. we'll find out when the Apaches go in....

The Serbia-Russia Connection

AS FOREIGN REPORT went to press, a Russian delegation headed by the
prime minister, Yevgeny Primakov, had arrived in Belgrade, the Serbian
capital, on a mission designed to bring peace to Kosovo. His chances seemed slim. Earlier, a lower-level delegation had been scheduled to make the visit. It caused some concern in NATO circles, not least because one of the visitors was said to be a sales representative of the Russian arms company, Rozvoorouzhennie. This company is one of the world's biggest arms firms.

We have been told that the company has informed the Russian government
that, if given the green light by the politicians, it could immediately supply Serbia with thermal night-vision equipment for its Sam-6 anti-aircraft batteries.

Until now, there has been little response from Serbia's anti-aircraft systems to NATO's air attacks. The downing of an F-117 Stealth fighter at the weekend appears to have been the result of a lucky hit by a high-powered machinegun. By toying with the idea of selling night-vision equipment to the Serbs, Russia is probably hoping to put pressure on NATO to desist from its air strikes.

Hey jla,

Remember in Star Wars at the end when the Jedi sent their airmen in to attack the Death Star to preserve the Federation? A willingness to sacrifice your own people with the higher goal of destroying an evil force? Well I know this isn't Star Wars, and Clinton is no George Lucas, but what we have instead is sending planes up to drop bombs like a bull in a china closet because we don't want "casualties".....You can't have it both ways. If it's worth fighting for, it's worth dying for. The politicians are running this thing with no regard to innocent human life because they don't want the political price of coffins at Andover. BTW, I feel certain that we have brave military men and women in our ranks who would be willing to take on high risk missions if it could secure a real victory, but for now they are just following orders.

If we are going in there we ought to be doing it with overwhelming force, assets and numbers and we should expect that we will incur some losses. If the stakes are not high enough to justify a full scale effort and some casualties, then we ought not to be there in the first place.

Exactly right. It's amazing how quickly the lessons of history are forgotten. Out with the "Powell Doctrine", in with the "Clinton Doctrine": when in doubt, launch some cruise missiles and hope for the best; or, speak loudly and carry a small stick.
