Easy. Customers let E*trade get away with it. Customers give up. Customers go to other brokers. They basically "chicken out" rather than facing down E*trade in a one-on-one battle. What's worse, online posts encourage disgruntled E*trade customers to switch brokers! Can you imagine that? Switch rather than fight? Apparently there are lots of "pink pussies" out there, because I see little online in the way of E*trade customers taking a stand against E*trade's obvious attempts at customer abuse.

zoya, this explanation from E-Trade is lame. I just opened an account there. The only reason for opening the account, was to participate in thestreet.com IPO.

I had the same problem the first try. Didn't like my password. I tried again a day later; yesterday; and it worked fine.
