I'll tell you a story about Irwins "index". In 1991, I took up golf and was really into the game. I had a meeting with Irwin in which we were discussing the CDMA development and the chipsets. I walked into his office and sat down while he finished opening his mail. He opened the last letter, looked at me and said "I wish these people would stop sending me this junk mail for condos all over the world". He says "look at this, two tickets to a golf tournament in Georgia just to look at some condos". I saw that these were two tickets to the Masters. He looks at me and says " nobody here is that interested in golf to fly all the way down there, are they"? And then he threw the tickets into the trash can. I was faced with a real problem here. Two tickets worth about $1500 were sitting there going to waste, and I did not want to ask him if I could pick through his trash. I asked his secratary later about them and she said someone else had rescued them from the trash.

He doesn't play golf at all. but I can glady fill in for him if you show up at Aviara, let me know.....and explain why paying royalties between business units is alot like kissing your sister. It doesn;t make any difference. If you do this, all you do is transfer money around on the same balance sheet and make the year end bonus for the ASIC guy alot bigger than the one for hte subscriber guy. Doesn't change the price any and does not change the margins any. when they say that there is a built in advantage on the phones, it means that somebody within qualcomm is getting the ASICS at cost. Also Qualcomm does not have to pay royalties to themselves on a handset sold.
