For my opinion, there are many ways to short the stock. You
may short against your holding, borrow shares from brokers,
and sell your stocks covered to wait for an re-entry point.
Also, you may short the stock by selling covered and uncovered
calls.

The number listed on the web usually only tells you the
amount of open "uncovered shorts". It does not necessarily
indicate the other types of shorts. Anyway, we will probably
never know the reason why people wanted to buy ALTR
yesterday (Thu). They can easily get a better price today.
There must be some untold reason behind it. I think one of
the possible reason is the broker is asking them to maintain
their margin of their account.
