From what I've read the Clintons have huge legal bills. Some people questioned whether Hillary would run for Senator in New York because she would make less money as a Senator than she would in private practice. The drift of the article was that they needed money to pay the bills and Hillary was more marketable than Bill. Also, she has always been the bread winner. Author of article thought it was time for Bill to go to work but author didn't think Bill could make as much money as his wife.

Wealthy friends may have helped them out but their legal bills were very, very substantial unless something has changed. They were never wealthy people. They never even owned a house as far as I know.
