I remember reading at least a year ago that at some point HP would start making all their servers of a certain class upgradeable to IA-64. Looks like they're still on that plan.

The details on this processor "upgrade" are pretty ugly - the processor and I/O boards have to be swapped out.

The real question is whether HP will be able to deliver compiler technology to exploit Merced's parallel architecture, and whether any number of customers will want to try the merced upgrade, since McKinley will require another board/processor swap when it arrives.
