Glenn, was it your full service broker that recommended you short Amzn or just you?

Seattle, April 16 (Bloomberg) -- Shares of Amazon.com Inc., the largest retailer on the Internet, rose as much as 9 percent on expectation that revenue from its online auctions could exceed $20 million this year and $65 million next year.

Amazon's auction revenue could make it one of the dominant operators of online consumer auctions, said analyst Jamie Kiggen of Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette who raised his rating of the stock to ''top pick'' from ''buy.'' Online consumer auctions could generate revenue of $35 billion in 2003, he said.

''Amazon's initial execution has been superb,'' Kiggen said in a report. He also raised his price target for Amazon to $280 a share from $190, and said Amazon could reach that price within the next 12 months.

Amazon rose as much as 15 1/4 to 182 1/2 in early trading.

Seattle-based Amazon said late last month it will add auctions to its Web site to attract more visitors and capitalize on the fast-growing and profitable form of online commerce. The addition of an auction business will pit the company against top auctioneer Ebay Inc.

Last week, Amazon said it would buy closely held LiveBid.com to further expand the auction business.
