Bill -
I am using IE5 on NT. There were a number of recommended updates which I installed prior to IE5 including an upgrade to the office suite and also service pack 4 for NT.

My experience was the opposite of yours - I got much better email functionality, was able to integrate all of my various email accounts under a single interface (outlook) and the processing of email happens in background with much less impact on my normal use of the machine. Plus IE5 is MUCH faster than IE4 and has a bunch of new features that I love.

It may be that using all MS products helps. But I can't imagine why an email problem would cause you to need to reformat your disk. This is like going to a mechanic with a complaint that your car is sometimes hard to start and having him suggest that you replace your engine. Sounds to me like an inexperienced technician who regards reformatting as a "cure-all" for problems he doesn't understand.
