First, if a stock is very volatile, it tends to have larger spreads, which doesn't help volatility. Second, most trading volume is still not from retail investors -- their contribution to trading volume adds a disproportionately large amount of volatility. A lot more money can be made in extreme volatility. However, you have to place all your bets right. You can potentially make more money betting the hard bets in craps as well, but the chances are you will lose more money.
