Tensions Rise Along Iran-Iraq Border

<< Iran and Iraq have reportedly redeployed their forces along their common border. This move, the first since 1991, builds on steadily increasing tensions between the two countries in recent months. >>

That's all we need right now, trouble in the Gulf.

Hi Searle,

Invisible lines, huh? ... That's pretty hard for an engineer to comprehend ... Sorta like invisible support cables on a bridge. <vbg>

Somehow, no matter how we rationalize it, I think we both get buy and sell signals early enough to make a buck.

Regards,

John

U.S. Defense Dept. to buy more military jet fuel

<< The U.S. Department of Defense on Friday said it increased by 21 percent an already large military jet fuel tender for Europe, as the air war against Serbia headed toward its fifth week.

With the increase, the tender is for just under 58 million gallons and calls for both general purpose ''high grade'' jet fuel, as well as ''safety grade'' jet, a less flammable version used mostly by fighters launching from aircraft carriers.

An official with the Pentagon's fuel-buying arm, the Defense Energy Source Center, on Friday said the increase in the latest tender was ''a result of the world events.'' >>

<< The war has helped lift oil prices generally, and particularly, it has boosted prices of fuel used by the military.

Bill O'Grady, an oil market analyst at A.G. Edwards in St. Louis, noted that world demand for oil distillates -- which includes jet, ''bunker'' fuel for ships and diesel for tanks -- rose by 16 percent in August 1990, when Iraq invaded Kuwait. It rose another 6 percent in the months to November 1990, during the ''Desert Shield'' military build-up by the U.S. and its allies.

The impact of war on the oil market is not just for jet fuel, O'Grady said, but is driven by ''every piece of equipment and every man you move to the region. Folks are beginning to look around and say this is boosting demand.'' >>

Nothing like rising oil prices to give gold a boost ... Guess maybe the war does affect gold price after all. <ggg>

XAU is a spot index with options, but you can get OTC Futures. I know of no XAU futures {most would play the CRB or Gold}

XAU X Gold and Silver Sector Index PM Amer Narrow
cboe.pcquote.com

HUI A Gold BUGS Index AM Euro Narrow
cboe.pcquote.com
HUI may be defunct now... and replaced by the GOX

GOX C Gold Index AM Euro Narrow
cboe.pcquote.com

Some of the options positions on the XAU have been added in the last few days. It doesn't mean that the equity {individuals} isn't being shorted in the present against the XAU calls. It's most likely a hedge war going on.

XAU componnets at the bottom of the page: cairns.net.au
They should rename it to the ABX & PDG index

I'm almost ready to jump on the short side, again. Before any one considers going long, look to where the 30 year bonds are going.

XAU is interest rate, US Dollar sensitive.
charts.quotewatch.com

Gold is not affected by interest rates. But is affected by Monetary supplies, US Dollar, and foreign exchanges. Beware the cyclical bubble. This is expiration week.
