Hot stock: Global Thermoelectric jumps on Delphi sale

CALGARY (CP) - Shares in Global Thermoelectric Inc. (GLE) got a massive boost Friday after the Calgary-based fuel-cell developer announced a sale to Delphi Automotive Systems.

The value of the "purchase order as an initial commitment" from the giant parts-making concern being spun off by General Motors was not disclosed at Delphi's request, said president and CEO Jim Perry.

Global Thermoelectric shares, which had opened the day at $3.60, were jolted as high as $16.00 and were trading at $9.95 at midafternoon.

"We have been searching for a strategic partner to facilitate rapid progress on our fuel cells development programs, and we are delighted that a company with the resources and reputation of Delphi has selected us as their partner" Perry said.

Global Thermoelectric is working on a solid oxide fuel cell system, seen as an environmentally clean way of combining oxygen and hydrogen to produce electricity with water as a byproduct.

"We were chosen to work with Delphi because of our advanced fuel cell

technology, proprietary sealing systems and our recent breakthroughs in power

capability," said Jim Lumsden, vice-president of research and development.

"This project should allow us to achieve our milestones in fuel cell system

development much faster than we could have done alone. In addition, we will

benefit from Delphi's world-class expertise in controls and system

integration."

Global Thermoelectric, which originated as a maker of generating equipment for remote sites, said in a news release that it intends to negotiate an agreement with Delphi covering its entire solid oxide fuel cell project. In the meantime, the initial purchase allows Global to start work immediately.
