GroupWise Serves Outlook Clients (04/15/99, 4:59 p.m. ET) By David Drucker , InternetWeek IT managers can change their outlook on GroupWise. That's because Novell this week unveiled aplug-in that will let Microsoft Outlook clients connect directly to the GroupWise messaging and scheduling server. In doing so, Novell is removing a key barrier to IT managers who want to deploy GroupWise. By making GroupWise accessible through Outlook, Novell said it hopes to dash the belief among IT managers who have standardized on Microsoft applications that they must make Exchange their messaging choice. "People are choosing Exchange not because it's the best, but because it's Microsoft and it works well with the applications they already have," said Eric Arnum, editor of the Electronic Mail & Messaging Systems newsletter. Utah-based Novell is designing GroupWise Plug-In for Outlook not only for users of the popular Outlook client, but also, more broadly, for users of Microsoft Office and others whose desktop applications are dominated by Microsoft products. Outlook, which is included with Office 97, is the client interface used with Microsoft Exchange, but many non-Exchange users like to use Outlook simply as a personal information manager. Forrester Research analyst Eric Brown said GroupWise will continue to fight an uphill battle against Exchange and Notes for adoption as an enterprise messaging server. "Novell has to remove as many barriers as possible, and one of them is the perception that users have to push aside the client environment they like on their desktop for the GroupWise client," he said. The plug-in will be downloadable for free from Novell's website. The company has not announced a release date, but said the plug-in would be available in the next few weeks. Another hurdle to GroupWise adoption will be cleared when the next revision of NDS for Windows NT ships. GroupWise is integrally linked with NDS, which requires a NetWare server somewhere in the network. But the new NDS for NT will no longer need NetWare, according to Tom Rhoton, Novell's director of product marketing. He did not give a time frame for its release. Jamie Lewis, president of the Burton Group consultancy, said the NDS revision would be a plus for GroupWise because "a lot of customers that are already committed to NT as their primary network operating system are heading down the path of deploying Exchange." techweb.com
