So the point at which damage occurs is when the new IDE drive is powered onto a running computer not when the old drive is removed?

Dataport tech has confirmed everything you said. They recommend hot-removal only on fault tolerant systems. I bought in a rush and now I have a red face. It just means I have to shutdown once a week to change backup drives. Not a big deal...but not my plan either.
