"lingering in the background" is a good way to put it, because it lingers around in the back of my brain.

While I would love to stick around for 3-4 years, the above lingering may only allow me to enjoy a nice double.

Brian, some researchers are reporting .07 microns features with optical means, the real question will be will there ever be a post optical lithography. These features are of the order of about 150 lattice parameters, once you get to the area of less than 50 lattice parameters, you will meet a completely new group of problems not related to lithography but to quantum effects such as tunneling. Of course, the industry will find a way to use this to its advantage, but that will take a little time. I would say you have a good three years free of worry from post optical lithography (that does not mean post optical will be here in three years, but in three years there might be some visibility of viable post optical processes).
