victor,
Interesting thought. Some financial institutions have large sums of capital to invest. Insurance companies such as Berkeley. The majority of the funds are invested in bonds. The bond expirations are timed to meet estimated future obligations by the more sophisticated institutions. A very conservative and government regulated investment policy. A very small percentage might be set aside for venture capital investments.

I was briefed on a method used by several companies. A given amount of funds was set aside for venture capital investments. They look at maybe 100 possibilities over five years and select the two best ones each year. The theory is that nine of the ten may fail, but one will be a big hit and make up for the other nine. No more then x amount of money will be invested. No more then ten companies at any time. If the original pool of money is lost, no more venture investments. True motivation for the one or two young employees in charge of the venture investments.

I wonder if this is the venture investment strategy of Compaq. Intel is very different.
