<<How happy would we be if a similar article is written in 2009 referring to MRV as one of the gorillas to be toppled by the next wave? >>

That would of course be wonderful. Let's think a moment.

How did CSCO get so large and powerful in Networking and MSFT in Operating Systems when IBM was the dominant player in 1989?

CSCO saw the need for and the dominance of the Router and Gates saw the same for PCs, with DOS and Windows and Office Software. IBM was sleeping, secure (or so it thought) in it's dominance of the mainframe.

<<What if it is our tornado? What if it is almost our tornado?>>

I see the same parallels with CSCO today. They seem to me to think themselves secure by their dominance of today's enterprise and Internet. But where is their DWDM?, Their Fiber and Optical Networking products? Their Metro Ring strategy? Their Terabit router? The Network of tomorrow just may pass them by.

Their current high end router does 10-15 Million packets per second and carries a large price tag with proprietary interfaces like IOS.

MRVC just announced an Open Linux based router that does 26 million packets per seconds - and clusters 4 boxes for over 100 million packets per second. Aranea (demos in May) STARTS at 200 million pps and likewise clusters to 4 boxes for an incredible 800 million pps! New Access has a mini-breakthrough in Metro DWDM technology and starts shipping next month. (who knows what Silk Road has or will have?)

<<The implications are mind-boggling as much as unlikely.>>

Yes, unlikely - and certainly not with the current management, unless they can grow. But if they were to hire a Chambers type CEO and win over a few large carriers ...
