Marden/Diogeron,

It follows that, if Ericsson could lead with a new phone or other type of communications device, using this technology, it may give them an advantage over the other phone makers.

I've owned ERICY for 4 years myself and I remember back then the company focused on R&D while Wall Street scoffed at them. Those of us who invested then got the last laugh. Having settled with QCOM and the advances it's made toward internet capabilities I've been watching and waiting for ERICY to repeat history. Obviously, I'm pulling to be the first on my block with an ERICY cell phone with VRD. <VBG>

~~~OT OT~~~
I'm no techie myself but being heavily invested in technologies I likely share the same fascinations as most of you. A technology I first learned of through MVIS is known as Micro Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS). This technology is allowing MVIS to miniaturize their scanners making it practical to incorporate VRD into something the size of today's cellular phones. MEMS is a significant technology with a far and wide range of applications for many, many companies. Goodyear, for example, is embedding them in a new truck tire to measure air pressure without making contact with the tire.
MEMS are devices made with new technology that expands traditional two dimensional semiconductor fabrication processes.
Advances in photolithography and wafer processing have allowed three dimensional structures to be built on wafers using processes and equipment similar to that used by the semiconductor industry, but not limited to traditional semiconductor materials.
I'm often looking for companies using or making advances with this technology to gain an edge.
Delta Three First to Deploy Ericsson's New, SS7 Enabled IP Gateways
Higher Quality, Greater Reliability Gateways in Use on Delta Three Commercial Network
April 14, 1999--Delta Three, Inc., a subsidiary of RSL Communications, Ltd. (NASDAQ:RSLC - news), today became the world's first Internet Telephony carrier to implement Ericsson's upgraded IPT 1.6 telephony gateways in its global network. The new system, initially deployed in New York, Israel and Sweden, provides the Delta Three network with a higher call completion on first attempts, interoperability with most of the world's telephone systems, quick capacity expansion and the ability to offer many future enhancements.
''The key to offering reliable, diverse services is to have your IP gateway act as much like a traditional telco switch as possible,'' said Noam Bardin, Chief Technology Officer of Delta Three. ''By implementing SS7 enabled gateways, Ericsson and Delta Three have pushed IP communications to the next level.''
Ericsson's IPT 1.6 gateways are considered ''next generation'' because of the significant improvements they impart over other IP Gateway technologies used by most other carriers. These enhancements include SS7 (Signaling System 7) compatibility; open architecture with a real time operating system, and scalability. SS7 enabled gateways communicate with traditional telecom switches seamlessly. ''We now speak the same language,'' said Erland Lonaeus, managing director Ericsson IP Telephony. ''The new gateway enhances the intelligence of the Delta Three network. The SS7 compatibility insures increased reliability in handing off calls to traditional networks and transferring calls between multiple applications, which is a huge advantage for implementing Value Added Services.''
In addition, the Ericsson IPT 1.6 gateways have an open architecture based on CompactPCI, which means that increasing capacity on the Delta Three network is as simple as adding a few boards. The gateways also use a real time operating system for flexibility and greater reliability. The new IPT 1.6 is scalable to 780 channels up from 30 channels in the previous version of gateways.
Delta Three is a wholly-owned subsidiary of global communications provider RSL Communications, Ltd. Established in 1996, Delta Three was the first company to launch Phone-to-Phone Internet Telephony services. Today, Delta Three operates the world's largest global managed IP Telephony network, with 37 points of presence in 29 countries. Using its expanded network, Delta Three will focus its online presence as a Communications Portal, offering interactive voice, fax, e-mail, paging, voicemail, roaming services, messaging and other products which can be accessed via regular telephones or Delta Three's website at www.deltathree.com. Delta Three marketing and technology partners include: Telenor Nextel, theglobe.com (NASDAQ: TGLO - news), and Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERICY - news).
