WorldGate Continues To Draw Interest After Successful IPO
Dow Jones On Line - April 16, 1999 14:58

NEW YORK -(Dow Jones)- Shares of WorldGate Communications Inc. continued to climb Friday after a well-received initial public offering Thursday.

WorldGate (WGAT) rose $9.75, or 29%, to finish at $43.75 on volume of 6.7 million shares. The stock finished Thursday's session 62% above the $21 asking price.

WorldGate has developed technology to enable cable-television providers to offer Internet access through TV sets. The Bensalem, Pa.-based company's core product essentially makes Internet access just another premium "channel" that consumers can purchase from their cable company. The service is designed to operate using analog or digital set-top boxes to offer high-speed Internet access without the need for a personal computer or additional appliance.

The service makes use of the vertical blanking interval present in broadcast and cable TV signals to offer more than twice the speed of the fasted traditional modems. The service works best on cable systems that have had a costly upgrade to allow two-way transmission of data.

WorldGate is one of several companies that have capitalized on the demand for Internet stocks and IPOs despite minimal revenue and huge losses. The company reported a 1998 loss of $27 million on revenue of $1 million.

Though small, the company has attracted investment from firms such as General Instrument Corp. and Scientific-Atlanta Inc. - the largest makers of set-top boxes - as well as Citigroup, Motorola Inc. and advertising agencies.

WorldGate expects to sell its services to cable operators, who in turn will sell unlimited Internet access packages to customers at a price of $7 to $12 a month.
