Here's why I need to preference a market maker outside of the inside market - it's a common technique. Suppose I want to buy a stock that is running upwards, and I'm too late to get any shares at the current offer price. Assume that there are no Island offers that can be matched electronically. One market maker is only offering 100 shares at the current offer, but I see 2000 shares being offered by another market maker an eighth higher. I am willing to preference that market maker to get the shares at that price (and they usually fill you - that was my experience with MB Trading for example). The problem with ABW is that they do not allow you to preference outside of the inside market - your order gets rejected. Note that this is exactly what is noted in the UltimateTrader user's manual.
