APRIL 8 ~ During the month of March the Standard & Poor's 500 Index entered our projected 1999 minimum price target range of 1310-1340, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average traded in our minimum target range of Dow 9800-10,100. Although the stock market has now reached extremely high levels of valuation based on historical experience, we continue to rate the probability of a bear market at essentially 0% at this time. This assessment is based on our overall positive view of current stock-market fundamentals as they relate to the economy, inflation and interest rates. However, we believe the market would benefit from a short-term profit-taking correction. We would view such a pullback as a health-restoring process following the enormous gains since last autumn.
