Telstra Chooses Network Appliance For WebCache Deployment; Telstra, Australian Telecommunications Company, Deploys NetCache to Improve Internet Services Offering

Business Wire - April 18, 1999 19:17

MELBOURNE, Australia--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 19, 1999--Network Appliance, Inc. (NASDAQ:NTAP), the leading provider of dedicated data-access appliances, today announced that Telstra Corporation Limited, Australia's principal telecommunications company, has completed initial deployment of NetCache, Network Appliance's high-performance Web caching appliance. With the NetCache(tm) appliance solution, Telstra provides its customers with excellent Internet performance through decreased response times while reducing its internal costs by optimizing bandwidth use.

Since installation began three months ago, overall end-user download times have significantly improved, particularly for customers with higher-speed modems. The Network Appliance(tm) (NetApp(R)) solution stores frequently accessed Web content closer to the user. As a result, Telstra has recognized significant bandwidth savings, reducing the costs associated with dedicated international telecommunications lines.

"We looked at the entire caching market and quickly eliminated all software products because they were limited in performance and scalability," said Bob Warfield, manager, Quality of Service, Internet Products at Telstra. "NetCache's broad range of features, including its high reliability design, low cost of operation, and price-performance enables Telstra to deliver information to our customers faster, ultimately improving our ability to compete in the market."

"Bandwidth costs are a major expense to NetApp's international customers such as Telstra, and our appliance approach offers a simple, easy-to-deploy solution for Internet Service Providers (ISPs) of any size," said Amit Pandey, director of NetCache at Network Appliance. "Our NetCache appliances deliver the highest-performance and reliability making them the ideal choice to scale carrier class networks."
