True, particularly with the Irish, the Church centered Holydays at or near Celtic feasts to blur the distinction.

Here's an interesting deal I learned only a year or so ago for example. The seacoast people of Italy were rather poor compared to their inland brothers and sisters.

So, the hierarchy of the Church hit on making Friday a Fast Day, one where Catholics could not eat meat. What did this do? Well, it gave the seacoast fishermen an opportunity to sell fish and make a better living.

Why, you might ask?

So the seacoast people could afford to pay a higher tithe for Peter's Pence.

There's always an angle in there somewhere.
