According to a source who was at the meeting, one Compaq representative almost
needed to be physically restrained "from flying across the table and throttling" EMC's rep......

Thanks for the report. Nothing has galvanized SNIA like this. Good work EMC.

Here is an interview about Internet storage where they say they don't really need a SAN yet, but what they worry about most is......

Q: What's the worst part of the current setup?

A: The only thing I fear is that there is a single point of failure, however,
the machine has redundant sytems and has redundant cards. We also
have a spares kit with all of the important components standing by, so we
feel we have covered that risk.

Seems like they need a FC switched fabric more than they know.

GartnerGroup's Storage '99: Building and Managing the Storage Network Utility

gartner12.gartnerweb.com

Scottsdale Princess
Scottsdale, Arizona
May 10-12, 1999

KEYNOTE PRESENTATION

Storage Network Utilities: Just Birthing Pains, or a Long Road to Nowhere?
Speaker: Nick Allen, vice president and research director

You'd think that the homogeneous nature of the storing process would create the opportunity to connect, pool and share storage resources across the enterprise - a storage utility. However, don't let this tantalizing vision cloud your reason. The requisite technologies are just beginning to emerge, and the vendor promises are reaching incredulous levels. Key issues include:

•How will storage be connected throughout an enterprise? •What technologies and vendors will deliver separable and manageable storage resources? •What will be the roles for software in the storage utility?
