ZURICH (April 18, 1999 10:00 a.m. EDT nandotimes.com) - Swiss voters
narrowly approved a new constitution on Sunday that severs the Swiss franc's outdated
link to gold, helping pave the way for plans to sell off half of the country's large gold
reserves.

Results of the referendum reported by the SDA news agency showed a majority of both
voters and cantons favored the new constitution, to take force on January 1, 2000. No
gold sales can occur before parliament adopts enabling legislation that cannot be in
place before early next year.
