Hi Teddy, I think that the technologies are beginning to appear to allow a serious competitive challenge, but I don't see the wireless architectures in place, yet. No, that's not double talk, even if it sounds that way.

In order to reach critical mass, where a uniform platform personality could exist (necessary to allow for predictability, support, etc.), I believe that a FTTC or pedestal-like infrastructure must be put in place, with wireless taking over only for the last 1,000-2,000 feet in densely populated areas, and perhaps farther, where there are sparser POPs.

To do such would be a very expensive proposition, but one that is looking more appealing to me as time goes by, especially with the lock that the larger MSOs and the ILECs have on next gen technologies of their own. Perhaps this is even an option that existing xLECs would look at soon. I'm not referring to the normal LMDS model here, rather something that is more in line with 'net delivery, exclusively, albeit at extremely high bit rates in the Multi-100 Mb/s range.

In such an architecture, power company rights of way could conceivably be used to obviate the hassles that the incumbents would most assuredly present to startups and established purveyors, alike. But a deep, wide chasm exists between here and there.

SP-->Fiber-->Opt. Node/Xceiver-->Resid. Ant.--> Wireless Modem

Serious contemplation of such an architecture is more likely now, I believe, since wireless techs have taken some dramatic leaps, recently.

Perhaps Dr. Levy and others who have spent considerable time and diligence in this area would like to jump in here and comment (once again... since we've covered this same concept upstream, a short while back) on the viability of such a concept.
