Peter, Scott Mueller's book _Upgrading and Repairing PCs_ has a typically good overview (about 70 pages, in real english) of networking technology. I'm sure there are web sites that do more or less what you want, but I don't know offhand where they are.

I think the pay per question web site is an interesting one (tho I don't think its false modesty to wonder about my own quals on this one--better Sean or Spots.) One problem I have with pay arrangements (and I have made them on a case specific basis) is that I never know in advance either how much work resolving the problem will cause, how many follow-ups will be needed, and how reasonable the client will be about paying extra $ for follow-ups that don't result from mis-information. I would be interested to hear pro's answers to this.

For now, how many machines will be hooked up to your network? Will any of them need slow (10, not 100) e-net? And will you be using the standard US West DSL setup?

Good luck finding the info you need!

Dave

>>Dummy's Guide to Networking?

1. Get NICs (network interface cards) for each PC

2. Get a hub

3. Get cables

4. Put cards in PCs, plug cable into cards, plug other
end of cables into hub.

Voila! You're networked.

You may have to do a little network configuration
and software installation. No big deal. Nothing like
as painful as Datek customer service.

When you complete these simple steps, you're an expert,
same as the rest of us. This entitles you to (a) tell
others about networking in haughty tones using
great-sounding buzzwords, and (b) quit whining.

YOU ARE NOW ONE OF US! No more mercy. <g>
