Eric:

I've tried out 3 discounters and found Discover to work best for me. Commissions are $14.95 for market orders and $19.95 for limit orders. I don't trade fast movers and often my trades are multi-day, depending on what transpires, as I use TA and have profit goals that may be met intra-day. Discover isn't perfect, I've had problems with them at times, but they are much better than when I traded at E*Trade. And I usually see my limit orders displayed very quickly (as I stated earlier I often split the bid/ask thus improving the inside bid). My confirmations are slow compared to what one experiences at a day trading firm where they are almost instantaneous. With Discover it depends on the activity in the stock, but I watch each trade go off and when my inside bid disappears I usually know I've likely been filled although it may take a couple minutes to have verification.

" Note: In a very fast market, I
understand that market makers can and do turn off their autoexecution systems and
complete all fills manually. I don't think this happens very frequently, though. Have
you, Barb or Gary Korn noticed this frequently or at all?"

Let me answer for Fido.In a stock like Dell at the opening when there is news they will turn it off for maybe the first half hour. These are the days were Dell trades 100 million shares. Most other times no.

P.S ...lately I have been getting what I would consider very good fills at Fido.
