The old adage, "power corrupts," is cautionary, but it doesn't begin to tell you what to do if you are given the curse/blessing of handling power. Lawyers have unbelievable power over the lives and well-being of others. We know everyone's secrets. We know all the dirty laundry. We know where the skeletons are buried. We know who really has money, and who is putting on a false front. We know who is sleeping with whom, or worse. People also trust us with their money, their property, their children, and even their lives.

It's hard not to be arrogant. It's hard to be completely honest. It's hard to resist temptation. Anyone who tells you differently is either a liar or a better person than I am.

When I am wearing my sweats and tennies, I am just like anyone else. When I put on my navy blue suit, and full lawyer drag, people get out of my way. Weird. Intoxicating. It can mess up your head.

And then, everyone hates us, too. All the lawyer jokes. Think if it was you, every day you read or heard jokes about killing geologists, it would get real old.

And then, even a stupid lawyer is smarter than most people (not present company, of course) so it's intellectually stimulating, and ordinary life with ordinary people can be a bit of a bore, like you're slumming.

That's all I can think of at the moment. Oh, yeah, the money. Lawyers get paid more than normal people. Goes to our heads.
