I don't think E*Trade lets you trade without adequate cash or marginable securities in your account in the first place, so this issue never came up. If I tried to trade beyond my available margin balance the order would come back for insufficient funds. I never push my margin that far but it could happen if someone were already 50% or 60% on margin. I don't know where E*Trade sets their limits.

Don't want to find out either. I am 24% on margin at the moment with my short positions.

You are very right about getting out when you don't feel right. Most of my lumps this week came from my new "core positions", the Internuts I am playing with leftover shares. But that's what you deal with in a longer-term hold situation. Already had my fun trading those so for now I hold.
