The last time the small caps outperformed the large caps was from 4/30/97 to 9/30/97. The Russell 2000 moved from 343 to 453, a gain of 32%. Meanwhile the SPX moved from 801 to 947, a gain of 18% and the even larger cap Industrials moved from 7008 to 7945 a gain of 13%.

Just because the small caps do well for a few days doesn't mean the end of the fun. The small caps can perform well for quite awhile, assuming of course that we are entering a similar period.

RE: small caps at end of bull market. One thing to remember is that this bull market has been full of segment and sector rotations throughout. Remember the gonzo small cap market spring 96. While this was followed by a moderate broad decline, it was small/micro caps and mid cap techs that had a real correction.

Last fall, we had a booming small cap market, but no broad market correct following. FYI Scott (catching up on another load of posts)
