Would you or anyone else drop me a description of your dreamer? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you are talking about laptops..you do not want to hear what is in my dreams<g>

My 'dream' machine is an open architecture machine. Full tower with a lot of external 5 1/4 bays..the more the better. Price/value always gets in the way. The case I want is either a California PC model or PC Power and Cooling with a PC Power and Cooling Silent power supply. Both have 10+ ? external 5 1/4 bays. They are also a little deeper than the standard case...more room to run the cables up and down behind the drives.

Instead save a hundred bucks+ and go for a SuperMicro..Antec or Inwin Full tower..$100-$160 with power supply. I have a Supermicro and an Antec.

I do not know the latest CPU value but stay away from the latest fastest..the marginal increase in performance is not worth the five hundred bucks. I have a Celeron 300A ($75)..now running at 300 but had it overclocked to 450 for awhile. Stick with BX chipset CPUs..PIIs and SLOT ONE Celerons.

128 MB ECC RAM

Big harddrives and lots of them..in removable bays..multiple boot options using mobo bios...

Primary IDE drive 8.4 gig NT boot.

Second drive IDE 17 gig+ ($235) with dual NT/Win9x boot..KOT (Keep On Truck'n) and utility drive to fix the primary when it fails..soft or hard failure).

Third drive IDE ROMO (pair of drives rotate and remove for backup).

A couple of smaller performance SCSI drives just for the heck of it.

Mylex SCSI controller with RAID ($70) or better yet the dual channel model $160?

Yamaha SCSI CDRW and Adaptec Easy CD software.

Toshiba/TEAC IDE CD

Plextor SCSI CD as audio extraction source for CDRW

Powerquest Partition Magic and Drive Image software

Win9x and NT 4.0

Browser..used to like Netscape until AOL bought them. I actually find them more annoying than Microsoft..too much junk email from Netscape and too many crashes..

Eudora Pro?? email

Almost forgot you need a mainboard. Minimum five PCI..forget ISA unless you have some old components. Boards will probably keep one ISA for awhile. IF you want to overclock ABIT is the way to go. Otherwise AOpen or ASUS. I have an AOpen and an ABIT. I like the AOpen bios extras and the hardware monitoring options..although the ABIT may have them too. I like the AMI bios in my IWILL board better wrt boot options...but the WARD options are sufficient to implement multi harddrive bios boot options.

Video cards..ATI and Matrox have good reputations for driver support.
