I don't know. I've often heard women here discussing a man's automobiles, houses, professional advantages, etc. (my linguistic advantages provide ample opportunity for such voyeurism) in the same hushed and breathless tone that the New Agers would reserve for a lovely aura, or others might use to speak of a gorgeous body, or a flawless wit, or any other desired characteristic. The grounding is, of course, the desire to upgrade the lifestyle, but it is so thoroughly institutionalized that they no longer consciously think of it that way, which is why it is hard to accuse them of gold-digging. Rich men make them melt, it is that simple.
