"Founder of Spokane firm says he will start new company." Bernard Daines, founder of Spo.-based Packet Engines, said he will leave Packet and plans to start another company. Daines said he is not departing on bad terms and added."It's a natural consequence of when companies are put together." Packet, which makes high-speed networking equipment, was acquired by Alcatel SA last Dec.In Feb,Daines turned over daily operations of Packet to an Alcatel manager. In an internal memo,Alcatel said Friday it will combine 3-companies it ownes-including Packet-into a single division to be named Alcatel Data Solutions. The CEO of the division will be Steve Kim,formerly CEO of Xylan Corp.,based in Calabases, Calif. Daines already has a name for his new company:Worldwide Packets. Daines said his new company is expected to be an Internet hardware and software venture--similar to Packet and Daines' previous business, Grand Junction. Daines, 55 a 1962 graduate of Central Valley High, along with two partners started Grand Junction in the Silicon Valley with initial capitalization of $4 million and sold the firm 3 1/2 years later for $350 million. He returned to Spokane in 1994 to launch Packet Engine, which sold to Alcatel for about $325 million. This is an article that was in the Spokesman Review yesterday. It is chopped up but I typed in the important info.I along with thousands of other Spokane residents were waiting for Packet to go public, but you know the rest of the story.Bernard Daines is a man to be followed he is going to be known as a pioneer in the ethernet technology. Daines pioneered the concept, but other companies quickly jumped into the market.Oh earlier I mentioned Grand Junction, Dr.Robert M.Metcalfe was Bernard's partner.Metcalfe founded 3-Com Corp. {:-) D.A.
