The comments, and insinuations of the Forrester analyst are annoying and simple-minded. Gee, why would msft want to ship 2000 "on time?"
"'Cause it's an ego thing!" This is the most critical product in their history and it is very late. It needs to be out yesterday to solidify their current markets and extend themselves much farther into the corporate market, where sunw and novl are making serious inroads. It needs to be scaleable enough so that corporations who won't use it can genuinely expect the next version will meet their needs. When the task is completed, and they gain on those two and make further inroads into the database area, they need to set their sites on AOL alone. Aol has to be the next target, but they simply must shore up these other areas first. It has nothing to do with ego; the business is on the line.
