Teleology?? I presume, by that, you have in mind the following one of that word's multiple meanings: "the fact or character attributed to nature or natural processes of being directed toward an end or shaped by a purpose."

If so, I plead not guilty. I will plead guilty to a charge you did not make, namely, the charge of (apparent) anthropomorphism. nihil, please note: I did not mean to imply that when he takes over a pride, the lion makes a conscious choice to kill all the offspring of his predecessor, with a clearly defined goal in mind.

As for the interpretation that he kills them in order to perpetuate his own genes, it's not mine. That is the currently fashionable interpretation among scientists in the field. And it is no more "teleological" than the view that the overriding impulse of living things is to perpetuate the species . The "selfish gene" is now the rage, after all.
