Rudedog, I agree that the correct methodology to use in gathering the data would be to gather it from the customers. I believe this is what they did. This really is not difficult to do -- it just costs money. But for a cost of roughly $20,000-$30,000, this information could be assembled for anyone who wanted it within a couple of weeks with a random survey of large companies.

All we can say is we don't know for sure how the data were collected. I believe it was a survey, since it says "Projected Market Monitor survey of US workplaces." In light of this, to say that it was probably collected by comparing sales to vendors seems a bit strong. I appreciate your thoughts, though, and you are correct in bringing up the data source issue.

Rudedog, I should add that the source seems careful in identifying the methodology used. In the article on PDFs, they clearly state the source as "shipments to resellers," as opposed to the "survey of businesses" reference they made in the PC sales chart. It would be dangerous to assume that the PC data cited is from "shipments to resellers" when they have shown that they understand the different types of data sources, and would therefore not be inclined to mix and match.
