Don't know:but consider this:"Sales of servers, the computers that host web sites, should continue to be strong, analysts told the magazine." and this:This is an abstract from the Intel earning conference call: "Management also that that they are seeing strong demand for its Pentium III processors and sales growth is the fastest ever. Intel accelerated the introduction of other product schedule in all areas. In particular, the Xeon product lines now contribute the same percentage of revenues as do the Celeron product lines in the neighborhood of 8-10%. " Now: 1-Looks like to me that actually there is a war for the control of the low end processors market: Intel with the Celeron on a side, AMD and Cyrix on the other. AMD and Ciryx , if I remember well, have had a bad quarter, Compaq uses AMD on the low segment PC's, and we all know how did on this quarter. Apple uses his own processors in the iMac and in the power MacIntosh G3. Apple declares very good earnings. 2-Intel gave good earnings but disappointing revenues: IMO, this could be related with sales at aggressive price of Celerons ( High volume, low revenues, low margin, low earnings ) and a jump-up in sales of Pentium III and Xeon ( Low volumes, low revenues, but large margins. 3-Dell sales mostly high end PC ‘s ( Pentium III ),workstations (P III, Xeon ), servers ( Xeon ). 4-Hewlett-Packard , Gateway, Dell, declare healthy corporate market. Is my opinion that the situation is the following: - Apple good earnings means that the market is interested in high end machines: iMac, powermac G3, are everything except cheap machines. - Corporate buyers have slowed purchases of pc's, waiting for the now available PIII: I presume that this factor has had an heavy impact on the 4 th Qtr. of Dell's balance. And I think that will have a good impact on current qtr. earnings and revenues: All the boxes unsold in the last quarter , shipped, with PIII, in this qtr. But this is only my own point of view, and I'm not an analyst. Hope to receive critics if I'm wrong,or comments. ...And sorry for My bad English. Best and sincere regards, Luciano M. Trentadue
