E,

<<The second article told about an effort to treat habitual rapists by operant conditioning. Their penises were fitted with a monitoring device. They would then be shown films or literature depicting violent sex crimes, rapes. When they looked at these violent scenes, they became sexually aroused. As soon as the monitor detected an erection, the incarcerated rapists received an electric shock.>>

I remember something like that in "Clockwork Orange".....

Some of the desensitization experiments were done at Camp Butner, N.C. by the USPHS and Bureau of Prisons Federal prison. The buzz was that they were very successful, but were considered by outsiders too cruel and unusual to continue. This kind of work underlies Clockwork Orange. Castration and Chemical Castration (depo-provera?) were tried elsewhere voluntarily, the hypothesis being that excess testosterone is the culprit. The desensitization technique supposedly works -- I forget the name of the gadget -- peniledesensimanometer, flopometer, or somesuch (your not putting one of those on me!) but it's a doozie. It's used in Hawaii diversion programs along with other rage reduction programs. When they say "Knock it Off!" or "Cut it Out!" in these programs the guys really shape down.
