Heres an interesting article. Towards the bottom it talks about using Mastercard and Visa figures to extrapolate the growth of e-commerce.

And there are some indicators that e-commerce sales are headed for trouble, especially when examining the statistics recently released by credit card giants Visa and Mastercard. It's a significant indicator in that credit cards are the de facto means of transaction on the Internet. Both card companies continue to report that on-line sales are hovering at only 2.percent of their overall business, despite major, multimillion dollar ad campaigns assuring customers that a credit card transaction is now a safe bet on the World Wide Web.

"Our numbers don't really support the numbers that some analysts are predicting," said Joe Vause, a Visa spokesman. "Right now, we're in a wait-and-see mode on e-commerce."
