Of course, that's the problem. Everyone wants to rule the world. Everybody's a star. Everyone has a user name. The contemporary stars have to be as dysfunctional as their audience. So we have the new crop of filmakers imitating the old masters (DePalma does Hitchcock, etc), but with a more perverse perspective. "Normal" doesn't sell. All media is being recycled constantly, but given the Nineties perspective. The "new" music and films explore the abberations of humankind, stuff we don't need to know, but pay to see. The news media does it every night. I saw it coming back in 1967. All future media would have a rock soundtrack, and be "entertaining". The ACLU says kids can wear Hot pants to school.
Keep in mind that Elvis Presley appeared on Television about 13 times in his entire Career. Now, a new Madonna video is shown 40 times a day, via video clips, all day long, endlessly. (or insert any other artist with a high profile lifestyle here.) It's all canned. Life is canned. The only live action we get are the bombs falling..........
So, what's your movie? (As asked by Mose Allison in "What's Your Movie").
My movie is about a semi-artistic guy who invests in the stock market, so he may someday be able retire to Memphis and just explore "American Delta roots music" for the fun of it..That's something that John Fogarty still seems to be able to do, and actually make a living out of it. Meanwhile, the Everly Brothers can't even get a record deal..But GARBAGE is selling quite well. And Roger McGuinn is back to playing the bars. And the oldies stations play Beachboys, Four Seasons, and MOTOWN all day long, with an occasional nod to the Beatles or Elvis Did I miss something, or does someone at "programming" think we're all idiots? .....
