taxman: Gates gave a gift with no strings attached. Accept it at face value. His mind is no doubt very much in tune with how the data world will work in the future and what forces will shape it and if he misses the mark he is great at playing catch up while outmarketing the field.
Bet on Bill and his boys. The irony is that everyone complains that he doesn't give enough $ away but when he does evryone second guesses his motives. Kind of a Catch 22.

Is Gates is trying to buy the future, by using big donations to computer science departments at MIT, Stanford, Harvard and Cambridge to bend academic research in Microsoft-friendly directions?

I would if I were him! What you really want to know is "who are the bright boys?". You need inside info so you know who to recruit.
